amueller
Hi. I'm looking to buy a Keichousaurus as a present for a collector. I've seen some other threads, but I'm no expert, and so I thought I'd ask here about the specimen I'm interested in. As a complete novice, this looks "too good to be true" to me, in particular for the price that it's offered. But other threads had similarly looking specimen that were considered genuine. Thanks for the help! A.
Huntonia
This looks genuine to my eyes. Keichousaurus are common fossils so many roughly prepared specimens like this make it on the market. @Fossildude19
Fossildude19
Looks good to me - despite the mostly absent tail. Looks like it was acid prepped, to me. @steelhead9 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." BonuFrailman
Looks good to me. The bone detail is always a good sign when looking at up close pictures.

Crazyhen
Acid prepped specimen, not very nicely done. But, look at the abdomen, there are remnants of hatchlings. This is a gravid female as you know Keichousaurus is ovoviviparious. Gravid females are quite uncommon.
LordTrilobite
I see what looks like mechanical damage. I don't think this is entirely acid prepped. 1 Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite

aplomado
The babies inside make this one a cool specimen!
Crazyhen
Yes, it was also mechanically prepped. The locals usually use both acid and mechanical means to prep the fossils.
steelhead9
Real, ground down, then acid washed. But crazyhen pointed out something amazing. This is a gravid female, with a bunch of babies in her abdomen, making this a significantly important keichousaurus. I've seen a lot of keichs and never seen one quite like this. Too bad so much detail has already been lost, but this piece needs very good prepping, mostly with a pin vise. 1 Still Life Fossils
Crazyhen
Reference could be made to the gravid female below. It's in the "natural" form, no prepping was done. You can see the embryos clearly.
