Hello on my first fossil hunt today in UK coast I found the below shark tooth and this which looks like a fossil but I am not sure.

any ideas if this is something? If you turn it lengthways I looks like a head with teeth and the type of shark tooth? Both were found with lots of fossilised tree

Welcome to the Forum. :)

I cannot help with your shark tooth, but the other is a piece of a lower fish jaw, along with what may be a supraangular, angular, or pre-operculum or some other bits of the skull.

Well done on that. :Smiling:  :cool07:

Cropped, enlarged, and rotated:

Wow that is an impressive find for your first fossil hunt there. I would go back and look for more. I wouldn't think that a fish skull fragment that nice is common at all.

Thank you very much for the replies and the picture editing!! I was sure it was something but sometimes your mind and eyes see what they want.

what would the approximate age of the skull be?

i found it at Walton on the Naze which is on east coast of the UK and is popular place for fossil hunting.

I will try and upload some better pictures of the tooth

There are different ways, depends on the bone, where it was found, and the fossilization.

Looks like around 54 million years, according to this site.

Also see this site.
