Hi Forum members,

Yesterday I went to a spot in Herkimer County in search of Eurypterids! This spot exposed the Fiddlers Green Formation of the  Upper Silurian Bertie Group. I had never found a Eurypterid so I was excited to go, and I had heard this was a productive spot.

I got there and the first rock I looked at had an exploded eurypterid on it! There were eurypterid bits and pieces all over the place. Eurypterids seemed to be much more abundant at this spot than I thought they would be! I only got to stay there for a half an hour but managed to track down a few nice finds.

The rock at this locality is hard like concrete and is pretty much impossible to split (especially the freshly weathered out material). All of my finds came from surface collecting in the weathered out rocks.

Thanks for looking!

Owen

A cross section of something:

I’ll post some pictures of what it is later if I can split it out.
It’s about 4 inches long. I’m excited to see what it is.

An “exploded” eurypterid. The circled part shows part of a head and a body segment with two partial swimming legs attached.  B88B88ED-7CA2-413C-A155-2F324CB75A16.jpeg.18f2b1b747f70bb721a08bf14b8d78c0.jpeg9F1AD21C-4F7E-4BF4-A99D-CD5E27EADBC7.jpeg.32f496a5461b19e7103f42cfbbb63d4d.jpeg

So I was able to split out that mystery fossil cross section and it’s eurypterid that was split in half!  The head and some of the body segments are on top and the rest of the segments and the tail (which is covered are on the bottom. 431E7E8C-3086-458C-BE32-8F2DFA18247D.thumb.jpeg.bad2457ba151c09af66a38581d102efd.jpegC85BCE41-52F0-4BDA-9FBA-55CB95794840.thumb.jpeg.21554e7a03c380a16d484fb96aabc4ab.jpeg4337672D-20C3-4987-86DF-E4F70151630C.jpeg.6f47e0b6310b5ce9cc934863e1993ec5.jpeg8053F3EF-9B31-449E-8F7D-7694AE477459.jpeg.1c5b663cd4d19f01ec15943292f23e46.jpeg

Awesome finds!!!  Eurypterids are fantastic fossils - congrats on finding some!

Thanks so much! I’m super happy I finally found some. They were definitely a bucket lister.
