Fossil "D"
This is my first post and thank you for your time. My wife found this yesterday in the hawthorn formation and we thought it might be a unerupted dugong molar. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have multiple pictures to post but it will only let me post two so the size of the tooth at its widest point is 0.84".

Harry Pristis
These are difficult using images. But, make your own comparison: 3 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Fossil "D"
Thanks for the reply. Yes I agree, very difficult. It seems that there isn't evidence to me that there was ever a root and the top of the crown is unworn. The pictures I've seen, the crowns have wear on them. Harry Pristis
The more I look at your tooth, the more I think you should consider milk tooth from Gomphotherium simplicidens. Unhappily, I don't have such a milk tooth to show you. The pear-shape outline of your tooth just doesn't strike me as dugongid. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Fossil "D"
Well if thats the case that would be awesome. Are milk teeth this small?
Harry Pristis
I posted an image of an American mastodon milk tooth that is smaller than the accompanying dugong tooth. Your tooth is tiny, I grant you, but I can't pronounce on ALL elephantoid milk teeth. 1 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
