Allegedly new fish species from Vallecillo

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I saw this specimen for sale as a new species from the Vallecillo quarries.
I haven’t seen something like this from this formation. Does anyone have any idea of what species might this be?

The size of fossil is approximately 40 cms long.

The size of the matrix is 63 cms * 43 cms.

The pictures were not taken by me.

Thanks everyone.

Looks like an Araripichthyidae. Araripichthyidae is found in the Cretaceous of Brazil (Araripichthys castilhoi), Mexico [A. weberi in: Alvarado-Ortega, Jesus & Brito, Paulo. (2011). A New Species of Araripichthys (Teleostei, Elopocephala) from the Tlayúa Formation (Cretaceous, Albian), Mexico. Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. 31. 1376-1381. 10.1080/02724634.2011.602779.], Venezuela (A. axelrodi) and Morocco (undescribed new species?).

Araripichthys castilhoi:

Thanks a lot. Definitely an Araripichthyidae. This is the first I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been going to this quarries.
