Is this Megalodon tooth real?

Hi everyone.

I am new to collecting fossils and have recently acquired my first 3 to start my collection.

I have always been extreamly fascinated and intrigued by dinosaur bones and discoveries found all over the world and am really excited to have finally purchased my first few.

Can anyone possibly give some feedback on this megalodon tooth i have and let me know if it shows any signs of being fake? My grandpa has had this one since he was a kid and decided to give it to me to add to my collection... he is unsure if it is real.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. This looks like a genuine meg with some damage, and quite big too! There could be some mild touch ups in the root but I doubt any major work would be done without restoring the enamel and serrations as well.

Great start for your collection! Can you get a measurement from end to end along the slant?

Welcome to the forum! The meg tooth looks real to me as well. I don't really see any telltale signs of major restoration, but perhaps some other more experienced members can give better insight on this fossil.

When fossils are restored, they usually try to make them look pristine - sharp serrations, no enamel peel, etc.

They are usually trying to get top dollar for them, hence the restoration.

The better the condition, the more expensive the tooth.

Yours looks completely real, to me.

Nice meg.

What were your other starters, may I ask?

Hello, Peter, and a very warm welcome to TFF from Morocco! :)
