DatFossilBoy
Hey guys, Saw this Moroccan Otodus vertebra that appears to have some marks across it. Not sure if it’s bite marks or scratch damage. Can anyone tell? Regards
Rockwood
The central placement of the scratches, and lack of any around the rim point to preparation damage I would say.

Top Trilo
I agree, a bite mark would be stronger and if the animal was alive than it wouldn't be able to bite that way because there was just another vert in front of it. 1 “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. JohnJ
Given the number if hands it has passed through, it's likely just scratches from being in containers, unprotected, with other fossils. 1 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ

Mark Kmiecik
The lack of erosion to the scratches as compared to the rest of the surface indicates that they are more recent than the rest of the specimen, I think. One would expect a uniform texture if they were the same age. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
