This is a heavily permineralized bone. That is not in question.  It was found along with many other Mammal bones likely Pleistocene.  One has been identified. Another has been cut open and polished to show the inside and it is clear it is bone.

This looks like some samples of foot bones I have seen. I would like to confirm it is not human and hopefully get a species.

Several of this bones counterparts are already sitting in a Natural History Museum lab confirmed to be bones.  I know it’s dirty and was in fact covered in mud and moss when recovered.  I have not cleaned it to preserve anything that might need preserving.  I’m glad you all have opinions but i was really hoping for something more helpful.

Welcome to the Forum.

The dirt and matrix are preventing us from giving a more detailed opinion. Clean them up and show them again. Also, please let us know where they are from; that will also help with an ID.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

i look for several things when fossil hunting.  One is shape.  It needs to match fairly exactly to a specific bone for me to start an id.  you say it was found with other ice age fossils.  What else was found next to it,  this gives a suggestion of what it is likely to be.   A reasonable complete bone will show one or more articulating surfaces of smooth polished bone-- again these surfaces establish that it is a bone and suggest where the bone was in the skeleton.   If i have a piece of something that does not match my mental image of a very specific bone then I want to see evidence of cancellous bone or I too dont believe the sample to be bone.  I am not trying to be disrespectfull  (nor do I think the prior responders were being rude) but what I have seen does not match my criteria.  It is possible that other pictures will show cancellous bone exposed or a true articulating surface.

Questions are good.  Unfortunately you did not propose any questions.  You just demonstrated your disdain.

Rockwood did not demonstrate disdain.  :headscratch:

He stated that he questioned whether your item was bone. A number of us are in agreement with him.

You claim that it is not in question that it is bone. You have not yet proven this to us.

Bringing a specimen to us and expecting us to identify it, without any locality information, and vague assertions of it having been found with other bones is not a good example of scientific method.

5 of us have looked at the item, and are having trouble seeing this as bone.

Please clean the item, and retake pictures and point out what makes you think this is bone.

Keep an open mind, and we will as well. :)

Southwestern pa. The only one identified is an elk astragalus.  Most appear to have been smashed to extract marrow.  Some have deep cups taken out of them.  Here is one large sample I cut a piece off of and sanded one side down.

And I disagree. I believe he was intentionally disrespectful.  But if that’s how y’all roll I assume it’s because people often dislike your opinions giving you reason to be defensive. I understand how a negative groupthink can develop. I won’t take it personally

Not a good way to start off on this Forum.  ;)

You know what they say about when you assume things.  :)

And projection.

I am not being defensive, merely stating facts. You are more than welcome to disagree, but

Negative groupthink Why then would you deign to ask us for our opinions/expertise when you already know what you have?

I still do not see any evidence of these items being bone.

I see my attempt at ending the side topic went badly.  I apologize for upsetting the group.  It was not a big deal to me.  Just annoying and I reflected.  As I said I will not take it personally.
I do not know what these samples are.  I only know that they are heavily mineralized.  And objects with similar characteristics have been confirmed as bones.

I submitted the sample because I saw a bunch of foot bones from smaller animalS that were very similar.  I worried I may have a human bone in with my samples.  I want to make sure I don’t have anything like that.

We are a cordial community here, unlike many other social media venues.

Because someone is quick to take offense, or become defensive, doesn't mean we need to.  :)

I like a nicer approach during these divisive, unruly times.  ;)

That is the one semi question that was asked.

I am not an expert but I do not see bone. Just MHO.

Hi,

I am not a new poster.  My first posts were months ago.

13 posts to your counter, I don’t call it a regular of the forum either !

Here we are thousands of palaeontology enthusiasts all around the world. We have a lot of professionals, researchers, people who work in museums etc... Some members have more than 40 years of experience, for my part I have been looking for fossils for more than 35 years and I do not see any bones in your photos either.

By your attitude you insult the members who are kind enough to come to your aid. Put yourself in a position to deserve their answer and don’t be aggressive like that because it’s doomed to failure !

Questioning that it is bone is pure question. Is it bone ?

The implication is that the answer has not been given, but is thought to be negative. It is just a dry scientific response.

Did you find the bones "sitting in a Natural History Museum lab confirmed to be bones"?

Do you have photos of those bones?

I still don't see any bone in the images.  That is certainly NOT an elk astragalus.  Elk is a cervid and its astragalus resembles that of any other  deer.

The cut and polished object has no characteristic trabecular bone or cancellous pattern we would expect in the interior of a bone.
