Ludwigia
I just couldn't resist revisiting the Callovian site again which I recently reported about here. I was figuring on removing some more overburden to get back in at the productive layer. To this purpose I brought along my heavy pickaxe this time. That saved a lot of wear and tear on the wrist, although my elbows were beginning to ache a bit later on in the day, but that was no worse than playing a couple of sets of tennis As usual, my first finds were little stuff. But then the hope-for big one appeared. It also wasn't quite complete in the end, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to restore the missing parts once I get down to it. I had already begun to hear thunder in the distance as I began working on this and it was starting to get closer. So at this point I figured that my collecting day was soon to come to an end and started packing things away. But as luck would have it, it was just a bunch of noise and nary a drop of rain fell for the rest of the day. I managed to dig out another large ammonite which looked quite promising even after I had removed most of the overburden. 8 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
But it turned out to be somewhat emaciated toward the back. Oh well. Maybe I can rescue this one somehow as well. I recieved a visit at this point from a friendly local elderly gentleman who was curious to see what I was up to. When he heard what I was doing and after I showed him the finds, he told me that a creek near his brother's shack was full of these snails and promptly gave me directions as to how to get there. So you'll never guess where I'll be going for my next trip, right? I then took a pic of the rest of the smaller finds after he had left and headed on back up the path to my car. This time I finished off the day with a Red Bull and Gulash with Spätzle, Swabian noodles. 10 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Everhardus
Darn that 2nd one looked promising. Can’t wait what you do with them as i have one left which is incomplete and i am in doubt of prepping and restoring it.... Can’t wait for a trip report on the “creek-spot”. Yes, it was a bit of a disappointment, but maybe I'll still be able to save it somehow. The trip report will probably have to wait, since rain and colder weather is coming to us. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. I decided to go to the "creek spot" today, since this was the last day without rain before we presumeably get washed out. That turned out to be a dud. The old fella told me I didn't even need my hammer and chisel. "They're just laying there in the creek and all you have to do is pick them up". So I figured it must be a direct exposure. I guess he must have just hit it lucky, since all I could find was a couple of impressions and a heap of mixed rubble up and down the creek. No exposure to be found at any rate and all I took home was a cute little brachiopod. I'm glad I did this today, though, otherwise the thought of this site would probably have been bothering me for the next week. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
I got down to scribing the 2 big ones this evening. Number 1 won't be worth saving. There's just too much original material missing. But I may have a go at restoring number 2 once I've given it a once-over with the abrader for a better look. Ludwigia
Here's #2 after abrading. Practically all of the shell is there, but crushed and cracked, which makes it quite interesting. So I think I'll have a go at restoring it. And here are some of the smaller ones which I've just finished prepping. Lissoceras sp. This one is extremely rare, so it's a keeper, even though somewhat damaged. Kepplerites (Toricellites) lahuseni And this one is just lovely in itself and also not so frequent. Macrocephalites (Dolikephalites) cf. perseverans 3 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
