Sacrum Prep

I’ve been working on this prep on and off for several months for a client and I finally finished it this week. It took 24 hours and there’s a huge pile of rock chips on my bench and lab floor thanks to this! This is the sacrum from a Triassic Phytosaur.

Here’s a before and some after photos.

This thing was covered in calcite and there were areas where it had displaced the bone and even grew into the bone itself. That stuff will make you lose your religion!

Or cause you to start praying?

Accomplishing the impossible means only that the boss will add it to your regular duties.

The praying starts at the beginning of the prep.

Me, “Please Lord, no calcite on this one.”

God, “Why should this bone be any different than the rest of the bones In the skeleton?”

Good ole calcite.  Every preparators nightmare.  Id say you did a magnificent job for only 24 hours.  Of course I wasnt there so I can only imagine how it must have seemed forever.  :)

Outstanding job!!!   Wish my skills were that good.

It only takes time... and a lot of rock breaking.

Man that is some impressive work!!! It's one thing to prep something you like for your own collection, but I think I would typically care less and have a terrible time prepping something like that for somebody else. Money or not, I would just want it on my shelf!

Yah. It is hard to give them back sometimes. :D

The caring less part doesn’t happen because that is a very self-limiting scenario. The less you care, the less you have to prep, not typically a good business motto. :default_faint:

I have gotten to work on so much that I would never even see on my own it’s unbelievable. That alone is rewarding. I have little desire to curate a large collection and my personal attainment of satisfaction is more experiential so this arrangement suits me well. :thumbsu:

I suppose that's one difference when it comes to hobby vs career! I look forward to seeing more of your finished jobs.
