Help identifying

Found at the beach Outer Banks North Carolinia. Any help would be appreciated. It appears to be a hollow tooth or portion of a jaw line of some kind. It is 3.25 inches long, 1.75 inches wide, and 1.75 inches tall

Hi There,

Welcome to the forum !

To my eyes, this could be a portion, or cusp of a Mastodon tooth. (though Gomphotherium is always a possibility) @Harry Pristis@Shellseeker

Tapir tooth x 1/2

I was looking at the size of this partial .. at 3.25 inches wide that would have been a ginormous tapir no ? Most of the examples of Tapir I've seen don't go beyond 1.5 inches or so.

Cheers,

Brett

Guess that is a tad large. Didn't catch that.

Sure looks like one though.

Yeah .. it does right ? ... It's hollow too. I can't find any references with mastodon teeth that are hollow like that.... :shakehead:

Amazing !!!!!!

I had my thrill back in May of 2011 (I was a much younger person then...)

I always believed mine to be  Mastodon rather than Gomph... Yours is also...

I guess the reason the tooth is hollow is because it was in formation and it had not come out of the jaw bone.

Yes, I learn something new every day .. and the more of these things you run across the more you fill in the gaps. Pretty cool, all of my mastodon bits apparently were from erupted teeth. Thanks !

Cheers,

Brett
