help ID my 2 backyard fossils

Recommended Posts

These two fossils were pushed to the surface of my back yard by frost heave after we had a new septic system installed.

I would really appreciate it if someone would ID these for me and, if possible, please tell me a little something about them such as their age/geologic period. I have given them to my grandchildren and they would love to know more about them!

They were found about 35 miles NW of Chicago.5f84843e4376e_Fossil1.thumb.jpg.f368e748868dca01926fe797b5bf2f7f.jpg

Thank you in advance!

I see some partial calcite replacement/eroded crinoid columnals in the first (though could be a coral) and the end of a rugose coral.

I'm fairly sure the first one is a sectioned branching rugose colony. The most prominent feature showing being the internal dissepiment. The septa somewhat obscured.

Thank you! Is there any way to judge the approximate age of them?

Given they are cobbles, that will take some positive ID...which looks to me like @Rockwood nailed it...I always forget the branches!

I just did some of my own research on the age of these and now have a rough idea.

Really fascinating stuff!
