October 13th, 2020 Santa Fe River (Florida) unknown

I found this 1/2" by 1/2" jaw section while screen sifting in the Santa Fe this week. The tiny teeth along the jaw are fish or insectivore like (pin like with no grinding surface), but the hooked canine looks totally out of place. Can anyone hazard a guess as to animal type? It is most likely pleistocene to modern.

This looks like a premaxilla of a fish, ... maybe something like a tripletail wrasse?

For comparison:

I've not caught triple tail, but of all the salt and fresh water fish I've caught I've never seen canines like that. Definitely was not going to let go once it had a grip. I would think more like stonefish or other ambush predator, but don't know where to look for fish dentition.

+1 for fish jaw. You may want to start with the bony fish section of elasmo.com. It is a great visual reference, if somewhat limited.

My resident fish expert asked me where I got the chiclid premaxilla when shown the pictures. Once I explained provenance, she got excited and agreed with the wrasse line of thinking others posted.

The blueish color reminds me of some derivates of Vivianite, if I remember correctly. I think your  nice specimen could be older than Holocene, but I could be wrong.
