This is a "mud mold" that I found in the creek near King Ferry, NY.  Approx. 8 inches long.  I've been told its a cephalopod.

I would expect to see some sign of the septa if this were an internal mould of a nautiloid. 

I'm not sure what it is, but looking at the surface of the rest of the rock, perhaps it's a burrow infill?

I agree - not a cephalopod, and belemnites came later. ;)

I see more indications against it being a burrow than for. I think a somewhat solid object (a clay lens would do) was in place at the time the sediments were deposited.
