Out of the countless New Jersey cretaceous crab claws I've seen and found this has to be one of the strangest claw partials yet. Seems to be an ornamented shell as apposed to the smooth claw textures that are typically found. Definitely a very interesting piece, anyone have any ideas on a possible species or if any ornamental crabs have found in nj cretaceous, or any other new jersey cretaceous hunters ever come across one similar? Definitely a head scratcher

The Jersey Devil

That's a nice find. There are a lot of different crabs with ornament like that that are found there. I think it might be Necrocarcinus or something similar.

Interesting to know thank you, out of all my numerous claws this is the first ever with ornamentation, great to know they have been found.

Agreed,

Here is an example of what I believe to be Necrocarcinus of mine

Nice. Reminds me of some of the tiny crab claws from the Lower Cretaceous here in Texas.  There are a number of papers out there on east coast Cretaceous crustaceans. You'll need to do some research...

Here is one that is close to it from the Abian of Texas. This is identified as Trachynotocarcinus naglei (Bishop, 1983)

Super cool find! I've found a number of crustacean claw bits but never one with that type of ornamentation.

Another possibility is Prehepatus dilksiPrehepatus has been described as a hermit crab, but that is controversial and it may be something else entirely.  Someone will have to find a claw attached to a carapace to be sure of the real identity.

I completely agree with everyone; with all the weird crabs that have come out of here it would be very difficult to assign these to one without finding one attached to a carapace.

What I find interesting, of all those weird crabs, for some reason, claws with the same 'look' keep popping up. Here are two of mine that look similar to the other examples posted.
