My Whitby Ammonite Collection

Welsh Wizard

Recommended Posts

Hi

I decided to display a few of my Whitby ammonites.

Most are self found, some bought. Some are prepped by me. Some prepped by other people.

One of the ammonites on the top shelf isn’t from Whitby. Guess which. Where’s it from and what is it?

I’ll post some close ups in due course.

Thanks for looking.

Nice selection in your collection. My guess would also be top right. Phylloceras from the Jurassic coast? Although on second thought, they can also be found in Yorkshire, can't they? Otherwise I'm stumped. I think I see a Hildoceras and a Harpoceras, but can't make out the other 3 properly.

@Fossildude19 and @Ludwigia. It’s the ammonite on the far right of the second shelf down (below the big Phylloceras). It’s a coroniceras from Lyme Regis found by my son.

I also forgot about the cut and polished Whitby ichthyosaur verts in the top centre.

That is a great display of fossils from a particular area/formation.  I've seen how those are found on the beach and can appreciate the prep that goes into ending up with specimens like those because I've done some prep as well.  How long did it take to assemble that group?

Thanks. Probably about 25 years. I don’t go collecting very often and don’t pick up much stuff.

I thought I’d do a couple of close ups of the ammonites.

Pseudolioceras found by my son and prepared by Mike Marshall.

Ovataceras ovatum.

This one was purchased and is one of my favourite looking ammonites.

And quite a rarity! Never heard of that one before....oops. That's probably because you meant to type Ovaticeras

Thanks Roger. Ammonite naming is not my strong point as you will have gathered. I’m getting better albeit very slowly.

Ill post some more soon.

I want an old looking display like this. I'll display one of each upper lias ammonite species and then the rest will be my prized bone pieces.

Believe it or not everything's in boxes at the moment :eyeroll:

A nice dactylioceras tenuicostatum from near Kettleness. Needs a bit of work on the centre and tidying up around the edges.
