I’m killing the last few minutes of the work day and decided to go back through this thread.

You have really come a long way in your drawing Alex! I enjoyed seeing your progression. Keep it up and be proud of how far you have come! :thumbsu:

  • 2 weeks later...

Continuing with the origami, here are a couple more, that took much less time and they’re both trilobites! I had looked for YouTube videos on origami trilobites but they are very simple and wasn’t what I was looking for. I searched for some more complicated ones but they don’t have tutorials, just crease patterns which show where every fold is, sounds helpful but they are no help at my level. Just google “trilobite crease pattern” to see what I’m taking about. That left me with one option, create my own.

The first one is an Isotelus. I started with the thorax because it was easiest, it’s actually made up of 8 square pieces of paper. Next was the cephalon, I did some random folds to get something that looked close enough to a cephalon. The pygidium shouldn’t even be considered origami as it’s folded down to get the size and then the edges are folded over to get the right shape. In the end it’s 7 inches long and looks a bit like an Isotelus.

For the next trilobite, I wanted something different, something with a spine, so I went with a trinucleid, Onnia. This trilobite has three spines, including two very long genal spines that go past the pygidium. I couldn’t think of how to make one so I watched a YouTube video on how to make a crescent moon. With some modifications it became a trilobite cephalon. The thorax was made similarly to the Isotelus but at a smaller scale and the axis being smaller and also made of 5 because that’s all I had room for and didn’t want it to get larger than the cephalon. Being micropygous, the pygidium is smaller than the cephalon, and looks very similar to the thorax so I copied the same design for the pygidium. So the entire trilobite is 2 inches long and made of 7 square pieces of paper. And looks similar to an Onnia trilobite.

None of these are anatomically accurate but it looks like a trilobite so I’m happy with them especially since I had to design them myself. Hopefully you like them too.

These are wonderful! I admire your creativity. I'm hopeless at origami or folding anything more complicated than a simple paper airplane.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

Thanks Mike, I used to be the same way but like anything after some practice was able to get better. These trilobites are also fairly simple, each part of the Isotelus thorax is only 9 steps.

These are great! Designing an origami template has always gone way over my head. Clay and stone make sense, but paper is a mystery.

Those origami trilobites are absolutely marvelous, Alex!

I used to do a bit or origami with my dad, decades ago, so I thought that Tidgy and I could have a bash at it.

Can you tell which one is the origami unprepped Leptaena brachopod?

Thanks Noah. I can't design anything complicated but I can at least make a square into triangles and smaller squares. :D

Thank you Adam, yours and Tidgy's origami is pretty good too. I can see all the wrinkles and growth lines, the white matrix is in the way a little bit though, I think you should prep it some more to reveal the brachiopod beauty that I'm sure you cleverly hid underneath.

Now that my secret Santa package has arrived and my identity revealed I can add my most recent drawing to this thread, one of @Fossilis Willis’s crabs.
