Hi! My son found this at Fossil Beach on the Potomac River at Westmoreland State Park, VA. I was hoping someone could tell me what it is. He is an aspiring (seven-year-old) paleontologist and very excited about his find! Thanks for your help!

So a whale? How old?

1. Could also be a dolphin

2. Most likely Miocene - 23 - 5 million years ago

I think at this size,  Dolphin might be more likely:  BIG dolphins and small whales tend to overlap in the similarity of their teeth. Form follows function.

You and your son might find an interesting picture in the following thread.

  • 1 month later...

A big-azz dolphin tooth for sure, likely to be a large kentriodontid: perhaps Hadrodelphis or Macrokentriodon.
