Fossil hunting at beaches

So i fossil hunt mostly in beaches. Where the rocks and fossils are from denmark. Im in sweden but how can i date the rocks? When i dont know what formation they came from? And i have found sea urchins and crinoid stars. But can i also find teeth and bones? Mostly of the rocks are from the cretaceous. If i should look for teeth and bones should i look around the loose rocks for loose teeth and bones? Or in rocks? How does fossil bones look like when the water has worn them? Is there any chance of even finding teeth? Sorry for the newbie questions :)

You need to look for geological maps and papers for the particular area Sweden has been pretty well studied and their are lots of papers and resources on line covering the country.

Otherwise, the fossil assemblages can give you an indication of the age you are collecting in. Watch out for zone markers; species that only existed at one particular time and can accurately date a rock layer for you. I have researched several sites in Sweden myself, the literature is there.

If the rocks are Cretaceous, there will be a chance of finding vertebrate remains. Again, look at papers or visit the local museum. Also, just look in the rocks. There are plenty of photos online and on this forum of water worn bone.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Adam. :)

There are a number of YouTube channels dedicated to fossil hunting on beaches. These usually give some very good images of fossils as they are found on beaches.

Train your eyes by watching the videos.
