The rock is hard, it's not chalky.  I found it near water.20201203_230635.thumb.jpg.863f8c68ac07364d3c68c48e869166f9.jpg20201202_104109.thumb.jpg.74a9fdaf96e7acf40f589ede0928a6e5.jpg20201202_104109.thumb.jpg.74a9fdaf96e7acf40f589ede0928a6e5.jpg

Just a cracked pebble, I'm afraid.

No eggshell texture visible, i think that's quartzite.

  • Fossildude19 changed the title to Possible Egg?

Hello Blanche,

I agree with the others.

I did also wish to point out, however, that to get a proper identification, it is always best to include the location found (country, state, county, city) in the body of the topic text,

to give us the best chance for ID. ;)

First, welcome to the forum--lots of great information to be found here and members willing to answer questions and pass along information in a friendly way not often found on other social media platforms.

As mentioned above, your item is not a fossilized egg but it is one of the best "fakers" I've seen in quite some time. Most of the "eggs" we see here tend to be things like round concretions or river-rounded pebbles (natural processes have a way of creating vaguely egg-shaped rocks quite frequently). The color on your find and the cracking of the "shell" certainly are suggestive of a rather flattened egg but that is merely coincidence. Fossil hunters often keep interesting examples of "faker" rocks that seem to be trying to pass themselves off as something they are not. We even created an entire topic devoted to these amazing imitations:

Fossilized eggs tend to be quite rare and often don't look much like what you might expect a fossilized egg to look like. We have some members on this forum who have deep knowledge about these interesting fossils and one of them has written a guide on identifying fossil eggs. You may find that an interesting read:

Southern Illinois has some interesting places nearby to go fossil hunting. Not too sure what is in your local area but you are in driving distance do some interesting places to hunt in northern Illinois, Indiana and the greater St. Louis area. Some searching on this forum should produce some ideas of interesting places to go collect fossils. While this fossil "egg" turned out to be a mimic, I'd keep it if it were in my collection as it is a fine example of the kind of tricks Mother Nature tries to play on us. ;) We'd love to see what other fossils you have in your collection. Post them here and let us have a look. Lots of great information to be had for the receptive and curious mind.

Cheers.

-Ken
