CBDeMiller
I inherited an interesting rock/fossil from my father and wondered if it was an authentic petrified snake segment. He was a physician, and received it from one of his patients back in the 1970's. The patient was a fossil/rock hunter in the Colorado region and said it was from the area. Those are all the details I have. Are there really fossilized snake segments like this around? It appears to have a segmented outer casing of 2-3mm around the whole piece. A circular (spine?) runs through the length of the piece on one side. The interior is fully crystalized.
Kane
Those very beautiful suture patterns are actually indicative of an ammonite. 4 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
Top Trilo
Agreed with Kane part of an ammonite, a beautiful crystallized piece “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. CBDeMiller
Wow - you folks are amazing. Looks just like the Baculites pix I found on the web. Nice to have a strong ID on this - but my octogenerian father will be surprised it's not a prehistoric rattler. Thanks everyone
