Florida vertebra find help

My daughter found this vertebra on the beach today while we were looking for shark teeth (at Mikler Beach, just north of St Augustine).

Any ideas on a more specific attribution? Thanks!

Hello,

Wondrering about your find I just found a very informative page about vertebrae, answering some questions I have asked myself for some time:

https://inside.ucumberlands.edu/academics/biology/faculty/kuss/courses/vertbraeribssternum/amphicoelousETC.htm

According to this, the concavity at the front end (assuming the broader end is front?) would make this a procoelous vertebra and thus most probably a reptiles.

I think there are many exceptions to these correlations though, as the vertebraes shape is determined by function as much as relation.

Best Regards,

J

We just recently had a discussion about a possible Gar fish vert ... I think Al Dente is right. It looks like a possible candidate for a Gar fish.
