bigfoots
Hello all! I'm new to the game but thoroughly enjoying myself. So that said I could really use some help with identifying some (most) of the many "potential" fossils I"ve found. These were all found on river banks in North Central Iowa. I will list them by number and add more as I go. 1. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15p9GKDhZK1mBZUiksjErnlhwQAb6E70b/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l23A-DrcGvbaRKthIkT79gS6ZFM_RYa2/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_XCaTR1krkVm5kqIneEJbWIVkC42ZSeX/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vlzuPnWx00U-8YFvBPZGSejUB04UiamW/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-L9oUVtqtT2zvmtMUaTWhOKy9Pta7Uq_/view?usp=sharing 2. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DJ_12ykiikggUVEkhkGNLJ3HEuKVsXxW/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rTveHiWYyfSayBgPJWuGUmTIAZg3aVoq/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/18oZBkLB8iAb-UcNc5IujAsG4_JBzAW1U/view?usp=sharing 3. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MW0QU5m5gNbqejkccsvZnM86TDsUGGkU/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v4QdfVqkB-PZZ8lY09bxk9s7vkaVSQnG/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r8VXLoRoj2v4nI4zrFjzUywKdyXYM0ZY/view?usp=sharing 4. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e6jg3sjwWYMmaMm1_awHGxF6iY4Vm6r3/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jo4652WCcRQG2RANifB3gOxO1hrnEiEb/view?usp=sharing 5. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZuNK9FClmPYMdPGrAZJhqurC4Kytiyz7/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/17JLcsLsG-FbZJd9QDB44moYfNBzmRbEm/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tjjYs0SfzyYHRFe9C83ti9cL-Htj63BV/view?usp=sharing

Sjfriend
Sorry. I too see rock. But I can definitely see why that first one might of got you going, I can see a giant very worn tooth-ish look.
hemipristis
Jaspers, cherts and quartzes. I"m sorry. On the other hand, the black cherts would be nice in planters or a fish tank. bigfoots
hmm...well the first one shows as a partial foot under a CT scan.. which in my opinion is exactly what it looks like. the second, third and fourth I had pegged as various scoots / boney armors from turtle or other reptiles... the fifth I thought maybe to be some sort of agatized bone fragment as you can see what appears to be fossilized bone marrow. This also concered by local retired anthropologist/archeologist.

fifbrindacier
Hi, sorry but yes, that's also a rock, not a fossil. 2 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." bigfoots
Opinions will obviously always vary and I definitely respect that. I tend to prefer wording my "opinions" as such with words like "appears to be " or "looks like" but never "it is" but thats just me. in my opinion there are no cherts/jasper or quartz present in these images. In regards to the fifth specimen I found a similar example of what I believe to be agatized bone fragment very similar to mine here:

But it is not. Its a suggestively shaped rock. Our brain is hardwired to see such things where there aren´t any. Especially dangerous things or human faces. Better to have false positives than to have one false negative (= death). The hole thing is called Pareidolia (link to wikipedia) This isn´t a psychiatric disease, its just one of the many, many ways the healthy human brain works, some kind of instinct. Our cognitive power can overrule this, of course. One of the many, many things that makes us human beings. Franz Bernhard

Does it look like a foot ? Not to me. And then you say "AS a partial foot"... Paleontology is based on facts, not vague appearances. 2 hours ago, bigfoots said: This also concered by local retired anthropologist/archeologist. Who is your local anthropologist/archaeologist ? A scientist ? What has he published about the fossilized human species ? Is his name recognized by his peers ? The vast majority of the members of this forum have more than 20, 30, 40 or even years of experience in paleontology, and we have a number of professional paleontologists. You come here looking for IDs but you deny their answers ! Personally, I have more than 35 years of experience... Paleontology is a science that requires years of experience to be able to analyze what we are shown and to form our opinion. Our goal is to popularize paleontology, to explain why one fossil is a fossil or another is not a fossil. This subject shows only rocks, no fossil ! Kane
Perhaps share the CT scan with us. if it is a partial foot, we should be able to make out the distinct bones. Thus far, I am in agreement with the others, but I want to extend the benefit of the doubt; that CT scan might provide something conclusive either way. 3 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
oilshale
Sorry, these are just rocks that with a lot of imagination have distant similarities with fossils. 1 Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC). LordTrilobite
None of these look remotely like real fossils. I see a bunch of rocks with interesting weathering patterns. Fossildude19
@bigfoots I would suggest studying what fossils actually look like, and what can be found in your area. Go to museums and see how the fossils look, and are preserved. Try joining a local rock or mineral club. This will put you in touch with like minded people. It may also give you access to sites not normally accessible to individuals, like quarries and private properties. Your items currently posted are not fossils. Not just my opinion, but fact. No scutes, no bone armor, no snake heads or feet. Things just do not fossilize this way. Please take your items to a local museum, or University, ... and have a credentialed PALEONTOLOGIST (not Archaeologist) have a look at them. 6 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." jpc
Speaking as a professional paleontologist... these folks are correct. No fossils here. No foot. But I would love to see the CT scans. I do a lot of that and I have found that it requires a certain amount of training and experience to read them.
