GABRIEL.P
This is a Whale ear bone found in Antwerp. It's from the Miocene epoch. I don't know what species is. Can you write your opinion, please? Thank you.
Fossildude19
I 'm not sure ear bones can be Identified to species. Maybe Genus. @Boesse 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." However, it is one of the toothed whales, one of the big ones. Baleen whale earbones are different. See this thread for discussion/photo of a Baleen whale earbone http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/96605-mammal-marine-earbone/ The thread that you reference is about a petrosal/periotic earbone. The earbone in this thread is a badly damaged/worn bulla earbone. Below is a picture of a Miocene Baleen whale bulla earbone that was associated with a Baleen whale skull that my sons dug out of the cliffs at Westmoreland State Park, Virginia for the park. The Baleen whale bulla: The Baleen whale skull and jaws being prepped at the visitor center at Westmoreland State Park (the skull/jaws is in four pictures because of the large size): Marco Sr. 3 "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." The Baleen whale bulla: Impressive and educating. It is hard to think of another situation where one could find a perfectly preserved bulla.. I could not help myself from staring at the photos of the skull and trying to determine where in the skull, would be the placement for the bulla. Will the skull and the bulla be displayed separately? It is up to what the head of the park wants to do. I haven't been back to the park since last year when I took the pictures so I don't know if they changed how everything was displayed. The skull/jaws were in the jacket needing restoration work by Dr. Weems and the bulla was locked in a cabinet in the head park ranger's office. Below is the the skull after being partially restored by Dr. Weems: Marco Sr. 2 "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." I am impressed by the progression and some time in the future may have a scientific paper on its restoration.
