AMNH Gallery of Fishes

Hi Everyone,

I was going through my old photos and I came across these.: A collection of fossil fishes in the American Museum of Natural History Hall of Vertebrate Origins. Normally when there one tends to gravitate towards the two enormous dinosaur halls, but this room is my favorite. Sorry, I don't have any IDs on any of these. Feel free to step in and ID them.  Hope you enjoy.

These are some really interesting fossils!

I can try to get IDs for some of the Palaeozoic ones.

Not a bad looking room to lose one’s self in. Some wonderful specimens on display. I see why it is your favorite. :)

Thanks for the tour Jeff!

For those interested, many of those can be seen and described in John Maisey's book "Discovering Fossil Fishes"

The head of this fish is from an Ichthyodectiformes. With high probability, it comes from a Cladocyclus gardneri from the Santana Formation. (Unfortunately, I can not read the description of this fish  - I can only guess that the first label on the right says "Cladocyclus"). But the rest looks very much like a Frankenstein fish assembled from various specimens. You can see several fractures that don't fit together very well. Especially the part with dorsal and anal fin has been put together the wrong way round. For comparison a picture of a "real" Cladocyclus gardneri.Cladocyclus.jpg.5bb7c1791412ff9948c37112c59b1790.jpg.

I hope that this is only a demonstration of the AMNH for fossil falsifications and not a "Frankenstein" that somehow found its way into the real collection.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).

Thank you and very observant of you to notice this. I doubt this specimen is a "Frankenstein" demonstration, and more likely one they put together as a best option for that particular species. It's good to know that even very reputable institutions like AMNH aren't above "faking it" with composite specimens and that we should examine what's displayed with a discerning eye.

Maybe it was prepped by Cope?
