Dino Dad 81
What's your take on the repair/restoration/legitimacy of this specimen? Thanks,
Fossildude19
Looks carved, to my untrained eye. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." PaleoNoel
Agreed, something about the texture makes me think it's carved.
Dino Dad 81
I thought I saw some of that appearance in the base—as if the base is more aggressively shaped—with maybe 20% resto in that area?). Also, the blood groove on the side with the crack looked a little like someone took a heavy hand to it. The rest seemed decent I thought though. Perhaps I’ve seen so many abominations, however, that my impression of the normal look/texture is off.
LordTrilobite
Actually, I think this one might be mostly real. I don't see any immediate red flags here. It seems to have been broken at one point and repaired. But I don't see evidence of carving. There is also some matrix remains in the blood groove, which I wouldn't expect on a carved piece. The base of the claw I'm less sure about. It's hard to tell if there's reconstructing work going on there. 2 Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite
Top Trilo
Is this line repair, restoration, or neither? I may just be seeing things too I think you are on the right track. At first I thought the tip might be sculpted. But on the other side we can see some matrix in the groove near the tip. So I think it might have been broken off and then repaired. Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite
Dino Dad 81
Thanks, @LordTrilobite@Top Trilo@PaleoNoel@Fossildude19! Really appreciate the responses. My relatively untrained eye took it as having some crack repairs along the articulated portion (but the repairs don't look particularly concerning and they seem so common on these claws)--but that any real restoration was fairly limited to the base. Granted, it sure seems to have a "good side" (and, hopefully, it's the one I'm referring to :-) For a 6.5" claw, it seemed like the overall condition is good, but far from perfect. Let's put it this way, for someone interested in a big claw, but who's happy to avoid the premium for top-quality, this seemed like one to consider, if priced reasonably. It sounds like @LordTrilobite has the most confidence/familiarity, but if anyone maintains concern, let me know. Dino Dad 81
@hxmendoza, I saw in a previous thread similar to this one that you're a go-to guy regarding claws. I'd love to get your take too, if possible.
