Searching for Dinosaur Footprints

Last year when things weren’t so complicated with COVID, we managed to have hunt for dinosaur footprints on the Yorkshire coast.

Here’s the beach looking across to Scarborough in the distance.

Here are some examples of the prints we came across:

Nothing fantastic but all theropods.

Heres one in a block that was carry-able:

I finally got around to cutting the block to size today although it was freezing outside. So here you go,

Hello,

Nice footprints. I have found one too but thought it was from the Aalenian. It looks like different matrix. This is from Saltwick.

greetings Walter

Hi Walter

Thats a nice clear print. I’ve only seen examples on big rocks at Saltwick and they’ve never been that good.

Well done

Hi,

I found an even better one with 5 individuals next to it. It was 120 cm x 120 cm. We salvaged it. This one is still in Lythe in the gallery of a friend. Put the posture on later.

You can find more but most of the time you can t take it because of the weight or size.

greetings Walter

Another print found today:

Again, Yorkshire coast. It was pretty heavy to carry as the block was about 3 - 4 inches thick.

Its hard to photograph but shows a nice 3 D print.

Hi Walter.

Yesterday, I finally got to see the slab you found last year. I popped in to see Mike to have a catch up and see his gallery. The slab is really impressive and I can’t believe you managed to retrieve it.

South Wales

Late Triassic. Probably rhaetic. A site near Barry which is an SSSI or Site of Special Scientific Interest. No hammering or taking of fossils allowed and the authorities have taken action against individuals who have.

Footprint first discovered in 1974 and a large area was lifted and placed into Cardiff museum. Trackways and individual prints can be found on a variety of bedding planes.

Prints are from theropods, prosauropods and other reptiles.

I will add a few pictures of dinosaur tracks from a field course I took in Denali National Park, Alaska this summer. 616F702B-800C-4A01-BDE2-A9F1CA31FD33.thumb.jpeg.6dd63eca74d41d918e2a9dfbeb1be73e.jpeg

Dr. Pat Druckenmiller the course instructor and director of the Museum of the North in Fairbanks, Alaska. Dr. Druckenmiller was very knowledgeable and super fun to be out in the field with. This was a hadrosaurs track and Dr. Druckenmiller demonstrated taking a LiDAR scan of the track and within several minutes had the scan processed in his laptop computer for viewing with accurate 3D measurements.643FD66F-7974-4A07-A4DF-632CE6A6FE09.thumb.jpeg.67474bfec7fffbf0bc0ed54678215c77.jpeg

Partial theropod track.

Hi Adam

I thought you might like the Welsh ones. They are hard to photograph but look great in real like.

Some dinosaur food I found in the same area as the theropod footprint above, including ginkgo leaves and ferns.

A quick visit to a site in Yorkshire today

A view across the fields of oil seed rape before walking to the beach.

I didn’t bring home any prints but got a nice split on this sandstone block of ginkgo leaves.

Not posted for a while as I’ve been a bit busy with work. Here’s a nice footprint found the other day on the Yorkshire Coast along with some dinosaur food.

A spot opened up short notice on the Alaska Geographic field course, Paleontology in Denali. I had done this two summers ago and throughly enjoyed it and  with an open slot went again this summer. Dr. Pat Druckenmiller gave a lecture the first evening in the Denali National Park visitor center about the areas rich dinosaurs tracks finds and general Alaska paleontology to a packed house open to the public. Then our group loaded up in vans and off to Alaska Geographic’s field camp in Denali National Park for two days of hiking to tracks sites.

IMG_3013.thumb.jpeg.815e5148de21f06acb1ec237db294f3a.jpeg

We were fortunate with fantastic weather for the weekend hiking the first day to the original track site located in the park.

The original track site identified in DNP called the Dinosaur dance floor.

The second day was spent searching up several drainages with the group looking for Dino tracks. Last trip I had found a few suspects and took photos confirmed with Pat. This trip no likely candidates were identified but I did find this dall sheep skull from winter kill. Last winter was particularly harsh here with heavy mortality in the wildlife populations state wide from deep snows and this area ice covering the winter range causing starvation.

AK hiker... you just posted this, but it looks a bit too unsnowy to be Denali in January.  When did you do this?

Looks like a great hike.

Correct, it was mid June, 2023 trip. I was not sure if people would want to see a repeat trip so @jpcglad you recognized Pat. What a great Guy!!! I had other trips in Alaska also repeat to some of the ammonite spots last summer and have spared the group from same old ammos.
