Can anyone identify this piece? Supposedly a fossil and from southern california, but I don't have it in hand so all I know. Ruler is in inches. Thanks!

Yeah, looks pretty modern. Try the Burn Test.

We have no shortage of possums for that to come from! I also believe it is modern. As @yardrockpaleo suggested, take a match and hold it up to the jaw. If it has a “burnt hair” smell, it’s modern. Fossilized bone won’t have an odor.
