Some sort of armor plate? Big Brook, NJ find

Found this today out at the brooks, stumped on what it could be - never seen this kind of patterning on anything from the brooks before. Perhaps some sort of armor plate?

That is an odd piece for sure. The brooks are well known for producing concretions which frequently resemble fossils or sometimes the ironstone replaces a fossil (I found the mold of a bivalve preserved that way a few years ago). I've picked up a few pieces similar to yours and had put them away with others which I believed to be geologic in origin. If it is a fossil, my guess would be sponge, but I'm not as familiar with inverts. Lets see what others have to say.

what an interesting piece!  The first photo had  me thinking fish pharyngeal plate, but the back said looks nothing like what I'd  expect such to be.  I'm stumped

I think this is a really cool-looking concretion. They form all kinds of cool patterns!

I agree with this; your find is a concretion, albeit an interesting one.
