Mystery Big Tooth(?)

Seaspawn

Recommended Posts

Also found on a shingle beach in South Suffolk, five or six months ago. I was delighted, and spent hours googling herbivores with the idea that it had to be something huge, but nothing fit. Is it not a tooth after all?

Unfortunately, this may be too worn down to tell much of anything about it. :(

Oh, that is a shame, @Fossildude19. What is SOP on that? If there's no good answer or way to tell, delete the post? Or is it okay to leave it up?

It's Tim. ;)  Much easier to type.

We should leave the post, as is. I have been more than surprised by our member's expertise in the past. Someone may have some idea. :)

Huh. It never occurred to me because I thought they all had the ridges, but there are a few pics of "Southern Mammoth" on google that look similar, and around the same size. That's actually incredibly cool, if true, thank you!

Thanks much, Will! I love your location. I'm really hoping I can pick up the finer points of tooth ID from the pros here, they're my favorites. :P

thanks:) i certainly wouldn't call myself a pro:P, there are many much more experienced members on the forum, but i can try to the help.

the folds of enamel in the dentin (brown boney texture) suggests a chewing surface more adapted to vegetation, therefore it is a herbivorous animal, as to why i lean towards mammoth, this has that circular fold in it, that you often see in mammoth teeth, for example look at the top of this one
