Early Jurassic plant fragments; East Berlin Formation in Connecticut

Recommended Posts

Here are a few recent plant finds from the Early Jurassic, East Berlin Formation in Connecticut. The first image however is a trace fossil identified (by an expert in traces) as Helminthoidichites and Treptichnus. Comments/correction/identification on the plant fragments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey Paul - cool stuff, as always.

Your first items look like trace fossils, to me.

Patrick Getty may be able to tell you more. I'm sure he'd like to see this.

The more broad item with the for is probably Loperia simplex

The other wider plants may be bits of branches/rachis of some plant.

I've never really been able to identify a lot of the featureless stem/branch looking things.  :(

Small pointed item may be a Pagiophyllum tip, where as the other conifer looks more Brachyphyllum like.

Unfortunately, there really needs to be some updating to the Jurassic plants found here in the North East.

Thanks for posting - I enjoy seeing what you are finding.

Thank you again Tim for your help with my small pieces of fossil plants!! The trace fossils were indeed identified by Dr. Getty. Thank you for the contact!
