Spinosaurus an Aquatic Predator ?

Troodon

Recommended Posts

Dr. Hone and Holtz take an objective look at Spinosaurus has an aquatic predator.  Gotta love it, another view,  excellent read.

From Abstract:

"Here we assess the arguments about the functional morphology of this animal and the available data on its ecology and possible habits in the light of these new finds. We conclude that based on the available data, the degree of adaptations for aquatic life are questionable, other interpretations for the tail fin and other features are supported (e.g., socio-sexual signalling), and the pursuit predation hypothesis for Spinosaurus as a “highly specialized aquatic predator” is not supported. In contrast, a ‘wading’ model for an animal that predominantly fished from shorelines or within shallow waters is not contradicted by any line of evidence and is well supported. Spinosaurus almost certainly fed primarily from the water and may have swum, but there is no evidence that it was a specialised aquatic pursuit predator."

Jim Kirkland posted yesterday that the behavior suggested in this most recent paper was

presented in this article of Utah Geological Survey 2007

One more side note,  T. Holtz indicated yesterday that "this not the last paper on this taxon this year. Others are in the pipeline."

Cannot wait should be interesting to continue the dialog

If you would like to hear directly from Dr Hone on this subject here is a podcast he participated in.   The talk includes the history of Spinosaurus discoveries from Stromer to today.

Includes a discussion on Sigilmassasaurus

What a great podcast. :) I really enjoyed this one. Very good and interesting points. This discussion is definitely far far away from over.

I just want to correct that the Holotype was destroyed in Munich in 1944, not 1945:

Here you can see an actual picture of the bombed bulilding where the holotype was located. I took this picture at our new paleontological museum in Munich. Yes, irrelevant to the discussion, but it's my hometown

I went into it not knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised how clear he made all his points.  Definitely recommend it to all Spino buffs that want to understand where he's coming from in this paper and overall in this debate
