Trilobite off auction site

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

This is literally my first fossil purchase and I know very little. Got this little dude off an auction site from a fossil seller who had a 100% out of several thousand reviews and I feel like something is off about it. I have a Mosasaurus tooth coming from this same seller so I'm a bit nervous if this does turn out to be a fake. What do you all think? Thanks!20210131_183307.thumb.jpg.19057bc96fd8dbd9bbbd8ed724854381.jpg

Hi, it is a good thing to always ask for more opinions to gain more info! I personally don't think that this is an authentic trilobite. The picture quality is not the best, but even then it appears to have small holes throughout the piece which is common with casts. If you got it off the big E, use your money back guarantee for a refund!

Sadly, I think this one is not real, but a cast. It bears a slim resemblance to Leonaspis, but the morphology is not quite right. I hope you can return it for a full refund.

It is a matter of representation and not necessarily reputation. Did they say 100% real and no restoration? Did they say it was replica? Did they say anything at all about it?

You will learn what to look for when you are an experienced buyer. Since I have no idea what you paid, I can't say whether you got a bargain or got burnt. It looks good for a beginning collection.

If you examine closely the  "trilobite", as @Jackson g said, you will notice MANY bubbles in the body, something that is seen in resin casted fossils. Probably 100% fake. Sorry!!!

There are plenty of genuine Moroccan trilobites for sale out there at reasonable prices. :)

Post your intended purchases here and we can hopefully help you make a good choice (regarding authenticity, not value for money which is subjective.)
