Praefectus
Hello. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the authenticity of this Dunkleosteus jaw. The jaw is coming from the Devonian of Morocco. It measures 12" long by 4" tall. The seller indicates that only the tip of the jaw was restored, but I suspect that the restoration may extend further. Thank you for your help. @Mioplosus_Lover24 Care to weigh in? Thanks. 1
Mioplosus_Lover24
Ah I've seen this one before! While I am no expert on Devonian fish, I would definitely label this one a hoax. Also on the "jaw" you can see far more restoration, crack repairs, stabilization, painting, the works. The hollowness of it is also highly suspect, and the texture appears to be more like concrete rather than a fossil... I would stay away from it. 4 "Life is too complex for me to wrap my mind around, that's why I have fossils and not pets!"

LabRatKing
The “base matrix” is complete fabrication. The usual signs of composite work is visible throughout for example, spongiform structures too close to the surface, etc.
jnoun11
hi too me everything is correct , too much acid eatched but , real dunkleosteus lower jaw on real matrix. nothing strange here. 9 The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. -Andy-
I offer an alternate ID: The lower jaw of a graboid worm Jokes aside, this has been enlightening. I too assumed it was a problematic fossil at first but it's good to see a verified paleontologist correct us 3 Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

I am not an expert on moroccos devonian, but I would agree. Real, but bad prep job as said. Resto has been marked correct in the picture.
trilo
Placodermi jaws are generally very rare, esp such a big one - they have always cracks or some brocken parts- This one looks quite good to me, too. The crack filling you can see are normal and the plaster parts are not so big - its very difficult to get a jaw and if the price is correct it is a nice addition- BTW in Lebrun´s book (2018) you can see one pictured just excarvated.
Acrocanthosaur
I agree with the others, looks pretty fabricated to me. Both the base matrix and the part of the jaw. Edited March 25, 2021 by Acrocanthosaur
