DPS Ammonite Posted February 11, 2021 Share Posted February 11, 2021 Very interesting. I have not seen anything similar in the AZ Mississippian rocks. I mention a sponge as a possibility if it is too irregular to be an echinoid or coral. It is similar to Pachyphyllum coral which occurs in the Devonian. Could it be reworked? Can you take a clearer photo of the circular structures? A coral should have septa. A hand lens in front of a phone camera works well for me. The structure looks like it is an internal mold of a carbonate fossil that dissolved away. The whole rock looks like chert with lots of molds. Is the rock chert? I would love to see it in person. Maybe I will have to show you some sites near Payson. 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.
