Current forecast is perfect – rain all weekend but sunny and clear on Monday. Fingers crossed it stays that way! Hope to see some of you out there.

I can't make it out until Thursday, but it's the first time since 2018 I will get to hunt!  Any idea about permits?  Are we still supposed to pick them up at the box on Huston St?

I believe my wife and I will be there on opening day Connor. Not just sure yet what area we will target. Do you have an idea what area you're going to hunt. Maybe we will see you !! I don't know yet if any other club members are going to brave it or not. We shall see.

Yes, permits can be picked up at the main entrance off of Huston, or they can also be printed off from the internet. Good luck out there !!

Best of luck to everyone! Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it for opening day this year, but hopefully I will be able to get up there later in the spring.

I'm not sure yet either. Might have to check out a few areas if the snow hasn't melted too much.

We are going to drive down there Sunday and scout the area for snow and such. Suppose to be in the 50's Saturday and Sunday down there. That will melt a lot of snow. I'll post a snow report Sunday evening.

I went through several 5 gallon buckets that I had freezing over the winter. One bucket contained concretions collected on this trip that I attended with Rich @stats and some other members. Here are some nice pieces that I found open today, a couple I had to tap open.

Macroneuropters

Drove down to Mazonia this afternoon to check out the conditions for opening day tomorrow, 1 March. There was still more snow than I thought there would be. The paths and a lot of the slopes  still had much snow. That being said , some of the south facing slopes were more open and had much less snow. The ground was more thawed out on the south slopes as well. We are going to give it a go down there tomorrow. Certainly less than ideal conditions, but hey, it's opening day at Pit #11 !!!

Awesome, Ralph!  I love the Macroneuropteris specimens!  Is that insect damage at the top?  I think they call the pecopterid specimen Diplazites unita now.

Cheers,

Rich

Correct Phil, all of these are from that trip. Have fun tomorrow and be safe, can get very slippery out there and I know it is going below freezing tonight.

I don’t think so Rich, I think it is the way it split. And as far as new names, I can never keep up with them LOL.

Definitely agree!  I have enough problems telling Pecopteris, Crenulopteris, Diplazites, Lobatopteris, etc apart.  When the desk gets shuffled, it's just much harder!

No problem... better than the alternative!  You have a lot of threads to keep track of!

@flipper559 How was the hunting? I wasn't able to make it, hoping I can this weekend.

We did well. We hunted the south end of monster lake (the foot) down at the waters edge. South facing slopes, sunshine, no snow, and thawed ground.  Cool day as the temps only reached the mid to upper 30's. Was very pleasant collecting in the sun !!  I'm going back down there today !! Going to be 52 for a high down there. Not sure what area I'll hunt, but most likely somewhere off the path between ponderosa & monster . Good luck this weekend !!

So I went today and I'd say my trip was so-so.  I filled up my 5 gallon bucket, but I think I mostly just cleared out a bunch of blanks for you all.  There was still more snow than I had thought, and a key route around Monster Lake is iced over and dangerous.  However, the snow let me know where others had already been, and adjust my path until I reached a clearing to hunt.  Hopefully another day of melting will make it a nice first weekend.
