Working sediment

What is the best way to work sediment pieces without completely destroying everything?

There are two spots in my backyard that my dog constantly digs at. Both of them are in different ares of my concrete porch, within about six feet of each other.

Below is a piece that I removed recently.

You could use a dental pick and gently scrape or see if you can dissolve it in water. Of course it does depend on how hard this chunk is.

Possibly some acid in a spray bottle to let it dissolve slower?

This will only slowly dissolve any calcitic fossils.  I strongly suggest you back off any 'preparation' with acids.  Actual fossils you find in this kind of limestone typically require mechanical preparation to expose them.
