katherine1977
Received in an opal parcel, i have been told this is a fossil, maybe of a plant stem. If so, i would like to at least put a definite name of some sort on it. Any and all help is appreciated! feel free to ask any questions! Thank you! Fossildude19
This actually looks more like the edge of a shell, rather than plant material, to me. Plant fossils are rarely preserved in 3-D, and more frequently preserved as compression fossils, and carbonaceous films. Partial fossils are nearly impossible to identify without much in the way of distinguishing features. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." katherine1977
Australia opal centre seems to think it’s some sort of opalized plant stem partially encased in a mass of nodular material that may be fossilized detritus. May be a cast of something, hence the 3-d aspect. Also, it is segmented. Would a shell be at all segmented like that?
Fossildude19
Shell could be segmented like that. However, I think you already have your answer from a competent source. I don't think it could be ID'ed any further than "possible plant stemcast." Again, I am unfamiliar with the opal fossil preservation. Sometimes, definitive ID's are not possible. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." katherine1977
i agree, i had somewhat come to that conclusion before posting, but thought i’d give it one last shot on this site just to make sure that no one had any other suggestions
abyssunder
Somehow, it reminds me of a tube worm similar to Hamulus, but probably I' m wrong. rodrex
i would hang my hat on opalised wood. A lot of the fossil wood from the ridge is segmented, and often only bits an pieces are found due to their segmented nature.
