Received in an opal parcel, i have been told this is a fossil, maybe of a plant stem.

If so, i would like to at least put a definite name of some sort on it.

Any and all help is appreciated! feel free to ask any questions! Thank you!

This actually looks more like the edge of a shell, rather than plant material, to me.

Plant fossils are rarely preserved in 3-D, and more frequently preserved as compression fossils, and carbonaceous films.

Partial fossils are nearly impossible to identify without much in the way of distinguishing features.  :(

Australia opal centre seems to think it’s some sort of opalized plant stem partially encased in a mass of nodular material that may be fossilized detritus.

May be a cast of something, hence the 3-d aspect. Also, it is segmented. Would a shell be at all segmented like that?

Shell could be segmented like that.

However, I think you already have your answer from a competent source.

I don't think it could be ID'ed any further than "possible plant stemcast."

Again, I am unfamiliar with the opal fossil preservation.

Sometimes, definitive ID's are not possible.

i agree, i had somewhat come to that conclusion before posting, but thought i’d give it one last shot on this site just to make sure that no one had any other suggestions :)

Somehow, it reminds me of a tube worm similar to Hamulus, but probably I' m wrong.

  • 2 weeks later...

i would hang my hat on opalised wood.

A lot of the fossil wood from the ridge is segmented, and often only bits an pieces are found due to their segmented nature.
