Matty from Reno
I found a number of fossilized bone fragments on the surface in an area of North Western Nevada which the geological map lists as "basalt flows- Pliocene- Holocene. " Any help on identifying what they might be from would be appreciated. I did try the burn test and I could not get it to smoke or have any smell that would indicate that it is not mineralized. pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon
Definitely bone, may well be recently fossilized. I don't think it'll be possible to identify these pieces other than to Chunkothere, but the first piece looks like a bit of one of the long bones of an animal (from their extremities) and the last bit as possibly a bit of mammal jaw (with individual tooth sockets). 1 1 'There's nothing like millions of years of really frustrating trial and error to give a species moral fibre and, in some cases, backbone' -- Terry Pratchett

Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate it. I like your insight about the one fragment possibly being from a jaw. There were a lot of small bone fragments in just one small area and possibly petrified wood as well.

Your fragments do indeed look like bone and are likely relatively "young". They are also pretty small fragments and ID beyond "bone fragments" in unlikely.
