St. Leon, Indiana Roadcut Collecting 3-9-21

Today on my way back home I spent a couple hours collecting on the mile long Ordovician roadcut of St. Leon, Indiana. I believe this roadcut exposes the portions of the Saluda and Lower Whitewater formations as well as the entire Liberty and Waynesville formations.

No matter how many people collect at this site, there are always fossils to be found.

Here are some pictures of the area.

I believe most people like to hunt for Flexicalymene trilobites while on their hands and knees in the Butter Shale (Liberty Formation). I came across many trilo-bits, but only one complete roller today.

There were many brachiopods, horn corals and nice hash plates to be found. Not everything shown below was collected.

Some lovely finds! Thanks for sharing, as usual. By the way, that gastropod on the right is modern if you didn't notice. I found an identical shell last time I was there and was quite excited by how perfect it was, only to realize 6 months later that it was not a fossil.

Thanks, I know that and forgot to write “Old and New”. There are a ton of those recent ones around.

Lovely photos of the location and amazing fossil finds.

Wild camels couldn't drag me away, as I said.

I love the brachiopods encrusted with Protaraea.

And that last coral, is it Cyathophylloides? is stunning! :b_love1:

Thanks for posting, Ralph.

I have had the privilege of collecting at St. Leon twice in the past two years. Truly an extraordinary site. Only a very sites I've been to can match it for preservation, abundance, biodiversity, and ease of access. Ralph, your stunning photos truly capture the place and the treasures it produces. Thank you and congratulations.

One thing is true: There is no chance to post this site and their fossils too often, because of this:

Thanks so much for showing us these wonderful fossils. I am especially in love with be brach hashplates, have a soft spot for all those already lovely prepped epifauna and would like to put also all the other stuff on my shelves :).

Thanks again, @Nimravis!

Franz, I always pick some of these up so I can include them with the Mazon Creek fossils and others, that I bring to the ESCONI Braceville Shaft Mine trip. I try to bring 4 or more, 5-gallon buckets of fossils, that I dump out for the participants to take home.

Nice trip report! You forgot to post the 12 inch Isotelus?????? (personal joke) Strophomena are my favorite brachiopod. How can one not love their appearance. Then to see all the epibionts on them. That's superb.

The next time I hit it, I am going to go high and low looking for fossils. I never spend much time there and many nice fossils can be found.

Looks like quite a productive site!

At this site, it is not “I wonder if I will find anything?”, but “I wonder what I want to take hone”. There are fossils everywhere and the area is so large you could have 50 people there and no one would be near you.
