Atypical Snaggletooth Shark Tooth

Recommended Posts

Unusual Shark tooth.  Inland, Venice, FL. Pleistocene material is common. Heavy serrations both sides. Bulbous protrusion. Shaped like a lower tooth but serrations on both sides. Tooth is 31mm long and 20mm wide. Is this an odd shaped Hemi upper or from a different species.

Looks like a Hemi. The anterior-most upper teeth (A1 and A2) in Hemipristis get straight like this.

Thanks, I didn’t have a reference of this tooth in my collection. Thought it was an upper Hemi, but the “bulbous protuberance “ threw me off.

Hi,

Your tooth is normal, in this species (Hemipristis serra) they have different shapes according to their position (which isn't the case for all sharks). Here it is a lower lateral tooth. On the recent species Hemipristis elongatus, these teeth are less serrated on one side.

One of my very first "outstanding" finds from the Peace River when I started over a decade ago.  Thanks for bringing back the memory.

Coco,

I think it was very much a part of "hooking" me on this fossil hobby. At the time , it was hard to believe that I could find something so attractive from millions of years ago.
