Cockerellites I prepped roughly a month ago

This is a Cockerellites I prepped about a month ago. I used a dremel lightly to get the top layer of matrix off, then used a regular pick for the finer preparation. For my second Cockerellites prep ever, I think I did a pretty good job. The coolest part of this piece is that there is a long piece of coprolite(?) ontop of its head. I have no clue if this would bring up the value, I kind of doubt it would though.

Thank you! I've done a couple knightia preps and I completely failed on a diplomystus, (it wasn't too great when I bought the plate either <_<), however I am planning on getting an air abrasive system soon! I'd love to see your Cockerellites prep, if you feel comfortable showing it!

What an ignominious way to be preserved forever! Makes an interesting specimen though. Nice job.  :Smiling:

Very good work!! How long did that take you?

It took roughly 32 hours over the span of a couple days. I've got another one in the process of being prepped, but it's way too fragile and the matrix is too hard for regular pick/dremel prep.

Good job but I don’t think you’re finished. :ninja: The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins all appear to have more secrets to reveal. Judging from your last photo, you prepped just shy of the 1st branching of the fins. Hand prepping under magnification should get you to the 1st branch. I don’t think you can reach the 2nd without abrasives.
