New fossil hunter - What did I find?

Recommended Posts

So I started fossil hunting and collecting recently. I dont have much knowledge on fossil identification and am not even sure if some of the "fossils" I've found are even fossils and not just cool looking rocks. Was just hoping people more knowledgeable on the subject could share what they think are fossils and if they know what types they are.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

I see some rugose corals, and some other corals.

Maybe @Kane  @FossilDAWG  @TqB  will have a look.

Agree with Tim. Perhaps you could indicate where these were found.

Found them in The Thames river in London Ontario.

Welcome from Romania! :)

All of the specimens posted are fossil.

It's a good start. Congrats!

The Thames has a lot of glacial erratics, predominantly mid-Devonian in age. Sadly, London has no natural outcrops, the nearest in situ material being in quarries at St Marys and in Oxford County. For collecting areas nearest you, perform a search here on “Arkona” (about 40 minutes drive away).

And the first piece is a brachiopod hash, fairly typical of some horizons in the Dundee Formation.

Ok, reason I've been going down the Thames is because its basically in my back yard. I'll have to check out Arkona sometime though, grew up real close to. Must say it's a surprise to see it mentioned as it's a very tiny town. Thanks for the info definitely got some good places to explore now.

You will love it. It is just east of the town of Arkona, along the Ausable River. Google map Sylvan and Fossil roads. On satellite you will see the pits, and you can also collect along the river where rock is exposed. Bring a bucket! It is slightly younger Mid-Devonian material than what is found in our city.

Does that river run through rock glen? If so I was just there a few weeks back, wish I knew to look then

It does! Unfortunately, no collecting allowed at Rock Glen, but the same material occurs at the Sylvan Road site. You will be flabbergasted at the volume and variety of fossils to be found, quite literally walking on them. :D

Yes, loads of marine fossils.  We get similar stuff here along the coast of California.  Congratulations!
