Cleaning (purple) carbonate from tooth fossils

Many of the fossils collected from the Bighorn Basin are coated in this nasty purple-ish carbonate material. I've tried soaking it in a dilute acetic acid but it's not very effective. Would dilute muriatic acid work? Or would it react with hydroxyapatite?

Try it on a piece you don't mind destroying, first! I don't know how readily muriatic acid will attack hydroxyapatite, but I'd expect it to etch it to some degree.

You may need to clean it off manually with a dental pick, or other prep tools.

Good luck!
