I will warn you all now that this is a photo heavy post, especially for The Mammoth Site. I wanted anyone to see everything that I was able to since they might not get there on their own.

I'll start with The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota. It's still an active paleontological site that was first discovered in 1974 while building for a housing development. The story of how the site came to be can be found on mammothsite.org. Please forgive my succinct description, my family has been driving around for several days and we're tired. I'm happy to try to answer any questions though! More photos to come.

Whew! Did you make it through all of that?? If you did, great job! But I'm not sorry for all of the photos, the world needs to see how many amazing specimens (and counting!) are contained in a small building.

Now onto a very small portion of the Badlands of South Dakota that have been dedicated to fossils!

I'm sorry, Candace, were you saying something? I was lost just ogling these photos. So I am assuming they built this around the in situ sites? Amazing! Very many thanks for sharing this with us! I would love to see this in person. In fact, I am guessing some of those specimens would look even better in your living room. :D :P

And last, but not least... and in no way not a museum... The Dinosaur Park of Rapid City, South Dakota! Up on a hilltop that overlooks the city are several dinosaurs that were built in 1936. We also got a great view of a couple of fires that surrounded the city.

They did build the building around the site! It comes with a heavy duty crane for lifting fossils for research. Oh come on, we all know I couldn't fit it my living room, I would just move my couch in front of it and live there. :mammoth::chuckle: I'm making my retirement plans now.

I forgot to mention: so far 61 mammoths have been discovered there. I believe 58 Columbian mammoths and 3 Woolly mammoths.

Amazing!

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this excellent series of photographs, Candace.

As you say, most of us will probably never get around to going ourselves.

Fascinating. :)

Thank you, Adam! Honestly, when I get to travel to places like these, all I can think about is sharing them with the fine people of TFF. I kept telling my husband to get out of my shots or he’d end up on here.

Once you have the bar installed, I'm moving into one of the wings of your new mammoth mansion. :D

Fair enough! I’m going to open up a mammoth mansion with rooms for rent for TFF members, you’ll have a special rate for being the first.

Great photo tour! Thanks! I particularly liked the cross section of wall that showed the mammoth foot prints in the clay. That was pretty cool that they found that.  Texas also has a Mammoth Site which has recently become a National Monument.  It's not as massive as the S. Dakota one, but it's neat to see the comparison of the two interpretive centers.
