Hi All,

I recently visited Walton on the Naze and found this...does it look like a fossil? I am not sure if it is anything but it looked interesting so thought I would take it home to have a proper look.

hoping to go back and look for more items in the warmer weather.

thanks in advance,

Gemma

It looks like a fossil to me, I don't see how something could naturally form like that.

So far I’m not seeing a fossil.....but could we see a picture of the other side to be sure?

This looks like something geologic to me: reminds me of beefy shale from places like Lyme Regis or Holzmaden (image from Kershaw and Guo [2016]).

Do you see these raised spots, to me they look like parts of bones

I don't know... I don't think I see it. I think this may be a case of pareidolia, a completely normal - if at times annoying - state of "recognizing" shapes and things that aren't actually there...

I see no fossils.

That's geologic for me too.

Upon revisiting, I still see no fossils, however this area from the second photo has something interesting going on:

Dead center of photo. Slight indication of a grid along the flow lines. Likely weathers sectarian structures, but similar to a lateral section of some corals.

Looks like carbonized plant material to me.
