FLAT Brachiopod

Recommended Posts

minnbuckeye

My recent trip to the Maquoketa Formation of Iowa produced a brachiopod that baffles me. It appears to have both shells but it is extremely flat. Help needed with ID!!!

Strophomenid, maybe Rafinesquina sp?

@Fossildude19, that is what I assumed this was until I realized both valves were there. I have collected Strophomenid from many formations but have never seen one "flattened with a steam roller" on both valves.

I have a few similar specimens that are very flat from all over the country. I suspect it is more from the pressures of fossilization than original morphology.
