I had this rock and the top broke off and there was a hair imbedded in the rock

Not sure where this came from exactly to begin with but I got it from a friend whose next door  neighbor had passed away who used to be a geology teacher at a local school  I guess his wife wanted the dirt and the rock pile gone so my friend needed the dirt and let me grab a bunch of the rocks.  I no longer have this rock so have to go by memory, I gave it to my dentist because it resembled teeth and a small jaw bone when the top came off.  The interesting thing is there was a hair imbedded in the rock where it fractured.  It was not fractured when I got it and it was definitely part of the rock but not sure if you can see it in the pictures.  The pictures are of all angles of this rock and of it apart as well.  It fit in my hand perfectly and I have small hands to give you an idea.  The rock was hard but not brittle even when fractured.  Kind of like a lava rock but not exactly.

Not seeing a fossil in this one, I'm afraid.

Agree, I don't see any fossils either.  In fact, the rock to me looks like it could be igneous (unlikely to have fossils).  Perhaps the "hair" was a small root that had grown into it since it was in a dirt pile, but I don't see the object so that is just a guess.

I too did not see a fossil just the rock formations that resembled teeth, the hair was an actual hair whether animal or not I do not know.  It came from  school geologist rock pile so I don't think he would have tossed it there if there was something to it but then again it had not cracked open where the hair appeared.  I will see if I can find any pics showing this better you can barely see its outline in the pics when you blow it up it may resemble a crack on these pics.

Don't know about how "hair-ish" it looked in person or how long it was but there are a number of minerals that grown in hair-like strands. Most are fairly short but some can be well over an inch long if I recall right. They tend to be pretty fragile though and would not bent much at all if touched before breaking.

Some of the above mentioned mineral "hairs" can also be pliable, so it's a good possibility. I've also mistaken fine roots at first glance for hair, so I also wouldn't rule out the possibility. Pity we can't see it in the photos.

Millerite is found locally and it definitely looks like hair. Here is a good example I found on line. But your photos do not show the hair well.
