Fossil or strange rock?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I found this strange looking rock in a creek bed in central Queensland. I've never seen anything like it before. Maybe fossilized coral of some type? There are opal fields and dinosaur fossils in the area.

Sorry about the blurred photos, my phone is just about stuffed.

Thanks

I don't see any fossils here - but clearer pictures would help.

Try taking them outside, in daylight, laying on a flat single colored surface.

Right now, from the photos provided, it looks like some sort of mineral accretion.

Clear photographs are a prerequisite to being able to make out the minute details that may help identify a fossil. However, in this case, the bubbly nature of the piece, as well as its iron-rust colour make me think this is some type of iron concretion. Compare to the below images, plucked off the net (the second is an ironstone concretion out of Licking County, Ohio currently in the Orton Geology Museum, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio [source]):

Thanks for the replys.

Yeah sorry about the photos, I don't know what is wrong with my phone.

I thought it may have been a mineral subjected to heat.
