Edmontosaurus rib?

Josesaurus rex

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody. I bought this fossil. It is supposed to be an Edmontosaurus rib. According to the publication it is 70 Million Years Old Late Cretaceous Discovered - Alberia, Canada Horseshoe Formation.

My doubts are the following:

1. Know if it is indeed from Edmontosaurus (from what I have seen on the Internet, I think so, but I want to confirm)

2. Know if you could tell me to which part of the animal it could have belonged approximately (if closer to the neck or closer to the pelvis)

3. For some small reconstructions that can be seen in a dark brown color, find out if others could have been made that are more difficult to see or if the fossil could have been painted. Personally, I think it could have been painted, because I see it very bright and very uniform in color. But I would still like to know your opinion, who are more knowledgeable on the matter.

Looks like one and I would say posterior since the head is at a wide angle to the shaft.  There are multiple hadrosaurs in the HCF and post-cranial bones are very similar and be very hard to diagnose to a specific species.  So it might not be Edmontosaurus

Here are the cervical and dorsal ribs of an E. regalis from HCF.

Cool!! Very grateful for your reply @Troodon

I guess I would have to label it Hadrosaurid indet. It is right?

Can you happen to notice if the fossil has been restored or painted in other parts that are not as obvious as the ones that come out darker in color?

The dark areas have had colored putty added but not sure they have been painted, I don't think so.  The color exposes the work.

Call it either its your bone.  Hadrosaurid indet is scientifically more accurate

Well thank you very much.  I'll consider it indeterminate hadrosaurid then.  Although the fossil came with an Edmontosaurus tag, I agree with your suggestion as I prefer it to be more accurate.

Glad to hear it wasn't painted.

Again, very grateful for the goodwill and great knowledge you have.
